Collection Overview

Biography / History
William Tecumsah Sherman (1820-1891) was a Union general during the Civil War known for his destructive march across Georgia in late 1864. In 1861 he served as a brigadier general under Robert Anderson in the Department of the Cumberland. Sherman succeeded Anderson as the commander of the Department in October of 1861.

Scope and Content
The collection consists of a letter from William T. Sherman to General Robert Anderson reporting on the conditions of his troops. Sherman also comments their unwillingness to listen to commands.
