Board to fund day-care center

By TOM SPALDING
Editor in Chief

Citing a need for working faculty, staff
and students to have an affordable, on-
campus facility for their children, the UK
Board of Trustees approved the establish-
ment of a campus day-care center that
would be completed by falll990.

The facility, which will be located on
the comer of Woodland and Columbia ave-
nues, would hold aboutl35 children. More
importantly, it will give UK employees
the best of both worlds.

"People want it because they have to
work and exercise responsibilities to their
children," UK President David Roselle
said.

The idea is based on a similar plan done
by the University of Alabama-
Birmingham, All. said Jack Blanton, UK
vice chancellor for administration.

"We bring to you a unique idea, a
unique proposition in terms of colleges
and universities," Blanton told the board.
“This is not just a baby-sitting service."

Under the agreement, KinderCare Leam-
ing Centers, lnc., of Birmingham would
lease one acre of land for $1 a year frtm UK
to build the center, Blanton said.

PORTS

At its own cost, Kinder-Care will con-
struct and operate a facility for faculty, staff
and students. A 20 percent discount will be
offered to UK employees and students.

In return. UK will guarantee at least 75
children of University staff and employees
and a ”year lease, with three 5»year op-
tions to extend the lease, Blanton said.

A pool of about 5,(X)0 children of Uni-
vcrstty employees showed interest tn such
a facility, according to a survey done by
UK. Blanton said.

“We did a needs survey," Roselle said.
“That certainly was compelling to look fur
ther" into the idea of a center.
