Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Gilbert H. King, William Preston, and R. H. S. Preston organized the Lexington Hydraulic and Manufacturing Company in 1882. The company dug four reservoirs in Lexington between 1884 and 1903 and opened its water works in Lexington in 1885. In 1922, it became the Lexington Water Company and took its current name, Kentucky American Water, in 1973. The company serves portions of 14 Kentucky counties, including Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, Franklin, Gallatin, Grant, Harrison, Jackson, Jessamine, Nicholas, Owen, Rockcastle, Scott and Woodford.

- The Kentucky American Water Company records (dated 1852-1985; 40 cubic feet; 133 boxes) consists of correspondence, reports, financial documents, blueprints, photographs, and newspaper clippings, which document the growth of water service in the Lexington and Central Kentucky area. The collection includes historical documents dating from the inception of the Lexington Hydraulic and Manufacturing Company to urban renewal in Lexington during the 1970s.

These materials document the time period when they were created and the view of their creator. As a result, some may demonstrate racist and offensive views that do not reflect the values of UK Libraries.
