- Biography / History
- Charles Alfred Hardin, Jr. was born in March 1, 1865, to Charles and Jennie Magoffin Hardin in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Like his father, Charles Alfred Hardin, Jr. attended Centre College, and then pursued a career in law. Hardin served a term of 10 years as Commonwealth Attorney and was then elected as Circuit Court Judge of the Thirteenth Judicial District of Mercer County for 22 years (1910-1932). In 1919, he was an unsuccessful United States House of Representatives candidate for Kentucky's 6th congressional district. Following his retirement from the bench, Hardin was appointed chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee by Governor A.O. Stanley. He married Ida Holloway of Woodford County and lived his entire life in Harrodsburg. He died on March 5, 1951, and is buried in the Spring Hill Cemetary.
- Scope and Content
- The Charles A. Hardin papers (1907-1947, undated; 0.45 cubic feet; 1 box) contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, broadsides, opinion writings, and other materials pertaining to the career of Charles A. Hardin, a Kentucky judge and politician during the early 20th century. The majority of the collection relates to the Kentucky Democratic party platforms and Hardin's Congressional race in 1919. The papers include correspondence from A.O. Stanley, Ollie M. James, Woods Walker, James Campbell Cantrill, Ethel Gist Cantrill, Margaret Castleman, George Lee Willis and Seldon R. Glenn. The correspondence, clippings, and writings reflect Hardin's opinions on history, judicial pardons, election campaigns and rules, and Women's Suffrage. A typed copy of the Democratic National Committee resolution (1919)to help further the ratification of the Woman's Suffrage Amendment is among the resolutions in the collection. Also included are political broadsides, programs, pamphlets, a mortgage agreement, pages from a logbook and a photograph of an unidentified sailor. One letter sent by a Democratic supporter discusses African American's rights during the Jim Crow era.
