- John Townsend (1885-1968) was a Kentucky author and historian from Lexington, KY. John S. Van E. Kohn was a bibliophile and co-founder of the Seven Gables Bookshop in New York City.

- The John S. Van E. Kohn letters to John Wilson Townsend collection contains correspondence between rare book dealers, John S. Van E. Kohn at Seven Gables Bookshop in New York, New York and John Wilson Townsend at Bluegrass Books in Lexington, Kentucky. Letters, ranging in date from 1946-1965, are from Kohn and mostly pertain to purchasing books or rejecting offers from Townsend. Collection includes a few general letters from other book dealers about similar titles.
