Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Central Christian Church began in 1816, when Barton W. Stone, founder of the Disciples of Christ denomination, established a congregation in Lexington. It was formally created as the Hill Street (Christian) Church in 1832. The church later moved to Main Street and changed its name to correspond to that address. The congregation moved to Short Street in 1894 and adopted the present name.
- Scope and Content
- The Central Christian Church records (dated 1852-1948, undated; 0.1 cubic feet; 4 reels) consist of microfilmed copies of the records of the Central Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky. They include church registers from 1831 (transcript made in 1860) to 1924, treasurer's books covering 1896 to 1935, and missionary treasurer's books for 1896 to 1928. There are minutes for the church as a whole for the years 1853 to 1859 and minutes for several subunits, such as the Ladies Aid Society, building committees, and the Woman's Council, over various times in the period covered. It also has copies of financial records kept by Norah B. Taylor and Bella Withers, Bible class records kept by E. E. Snoddy and Mrs. I. J. Spencer, and various church publications such as The History of The Woman's Missionary Society by Edyth B. Prather. There are also lists of former members and a deed to the Hill Street Church property.
