Supplied Senators
Is Out After July 7

Copious supplies of bottled;
Spling‘ water, which for many
years have been made available to
Senators. their committees and
clerks (free of charge). will dry up
July 1.

The Senate Rules Committee,
headed by Senator Hayden, Dem—
ocrat, of Arizona decided today
that at the end of the present
fiscal year they would cut off all
of the bottled water.

Clerks were not anxious to talk
about the amount of the water
which has been used, or the cost.
but one official estimated the bill
has been running;r about $18,000 a
year. Another placed the cost at
about $1,000 a month.

At any rate. the committee con-
cluded that the custom had “cut-
lived its usefulness," and that
hereafter Senators, like others,
could use tap water. If they want
the bottled brand they will have
to buy it themselves.

The Honorable

Fred M. Vinson, Chief Justice,
United States Supreme Court,
Washington, D. C.

My dear Mr. Chief Justice:

You may recall that several months ago I may have
violated protocol by suggesting in a letter to you that
I be considered in the event that the Supreme Court
should decide that it would need a Master to take
testimony if the Court took jurisdiction in the Texas
and Louisiana cases.

I will be out of town for several weeks on a trip
to Key West and other places south when the argument
comes up, and I regret that I will miss the Opportunity
of hearing it.

With kind regards, I am

Cordially yours,
