Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Dean F. Paul Anderson was born on Febuary 10, 1867 in South Bend, Indiana. He received his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University in 1890, and then went on to receive his Master's of Engineering, also at Purdue, in 1894. In 1891, Anderson became a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Kentucky, but wanted to return to Indiana to become the superintendent of Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company where his father had been superintendent as well. After five years he decided to stay at the University of Kentucky as a professor. During his years in Kentucky, he built the engineering program from a few classes to a full engineering course offered at the university. In 1917, he became the first dean of the College of Engineering at UK.
- Dean Anderson also contributed to the engineering world during his time at the University of Kentucky. He was an engineer for the Southern Railway Company for twenty-five years. Anderson also promoted the advancement of the x-ray in the United States. Later on in life, he was the director and later President of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers and member of the National Research Council. In 1930, The American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers honored Anderson by naming a gold medal of award after him that is annually given to a member of the society for outstanding achievement.
- Dean Anderson died from a long suffered illness on April 8, 1934, survived by his wife Josephine E. Fisher Anderson, daughter Mrs. Richard W. Bozeman, son F. Paul Anderson Jr., and grandchildren Betty Jo Anderson and Richard W. Bozeman.
