Collection Overview

Biography / History
Established in 1991, the University of Kentucky's Women's Forum evolved from a University of Kentucky Women Administrators' group active from 1988-1990. The Women's Forum is open to all employees at the University of Kentucky and strives to empower, validate and celebrate the women working at the University. In 1992, the Women's Forum inaugurated the first UK Staff Appreciation Day, an event that is now organized by the university Staff Senate. The Forum began the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award and Award luncheon in 1994. This award celebrates the legacy of Sarah Bennett Holmes, a former Dean of Women at the University of Kentucky who spent her career empowering and promoting women while struggling against personal odds. The award recognizes female employees who are doing the same. From 1991-1996, The University of Kentucky Women's Forum also hosted many brown bag lunch programs, usually accompanied by a general members meeting. The Women's Forum continues to be an active University of Kentucky organization.

The collection includes Board of Directors meeting minutes, correspondence, and reports. Programs and events represented in the collection include UK Staff Appreciation Day, the Women's Forum retreat, the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award and Award luncheon, and brown bag lunch presentations, discussions, and general member meetings. Topics documented in the collection that the Women's Forum was concerned with include harassment, parenting and working, university benefits, and women's representation in the workplace. Women's Forum committees represented in the collection and dealing with these issues include the parenting and issues committees.
