- Biography / History
- Louisa Lapoint Fisher was born in 1840 in Vermont to Alex Lapoint (b. 1811) and Melissa Lapoint (b. 1823). In 1862, she married Austin Fisher (1807-1892), a farmer, and together they had one child, Belle M. (1868-1887). Between 1870 and 1880, the family moved from Vermont to Wisconsin.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Louisa L. Fisher letters (dated 1884-1887, undated; 0.14 cubic feet; 4 folders) comprise letters sent to and from Louisa documenting daily life and education for women in Wisconsin in the late nineteenth century. Louisa writes to her daughter, Belle, discussing daily life at home, chores completed on the farm, personal health, what Belle's father is doing, visiting with friends and family, travel, money concerns, making and mending clothing, rumors about the school Belle attends, local gossip, and support for Belle's education. Letters to Louisa come mainly from the president of Milwaukee College and his wife, informing her about the school, what they can offer Belle, their care for her while she attended the school, and their sympathies for Louisa after Belle's passing. Other letters to Louisa come from friends also sending condolences after Belle's death.
- The Louisa L. Fisher letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
