Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- William Brooks Hamilton (1902-1983) was a University of Kentucky professor and bacteriologist in the Department of Hygiene and Public Health from 1928-1972 and also served two terms as president of the local Tuberculosis Association. In addition, he was an amateur photographer who was active in photography contests, organized photographic exhibitions and served as president of the Lexington Camera Club. Hamilton died October 2, 1983 in Cynthiana at the age of 81.
- Frank LeRond McVey (1869-1953) was the fifth president of the University of Kentucky (UK) and served from 1917 until his retirement in 1940. Before coming to UK, he taught economics at the University of Minnesota, chaired Minnesota's tax commission and served as president of the University of North Dakota.
- Frances Jewell McVey (1889-1945) was Frank McVey's wife and served as Dean of Women at UK from 1921-1923. She was known on campus for her graciousness and often referred to as the "First Lady of Maxwell Place."
- Scope and Content
- The William Brooks Hamilton album was presented to President Frank McVey and his wife, Frances Jewell McVey, on his retirement in 1940 by Hamilton. Materials consist of twenty-nine 8 x 10 inch and two 5 x 7 inch prints of UK campus buildings and events taken by Hamilton. A clipping from the Lexington Herald-Leader article on McVey's farewell address is glued in back of the album, and a loose 8 x 10 photograph of Dr. McVey with "Mr. Cutter" was subsequently inserted. Descriptions in quotation marks were taken directly from the album pages and others were taken from included slips of paper that identified elements or people in five of the photographs.
