KENTUCKY HARDY CHRYSANTHEMUM VARIETY TRIALS, 1965
J. W. Buxton and T. E. Pope
Each year many varieties of hardy chrysanthemums are available to the general
public. The trial garden at the University of Kentucky Experiment Station in 1965
offered the opportunity for interested visitors to compare colors, shapes, and general
growth characteristics of many chrysanthemums grown under local environmental V
. conditions. —
The trial area in the garden was laid off in 5-foot wide beds with a 5—foot grass
walkway between beds. During the first week of June 1965 1§—mil black polyethylene —
plastic was placed over the chrysanthemum beds. Rooted cuttings of 115 varieties of
chrysanthemums were obtained from producers and were transplanted through a slit
_ made in the plastic. The plastic was used to control weeds and also to retain soil moisture.
Ten plants of each variety, spaced 18 inches apart, were placed in each plot. The plants
were pinched twice, first when 3 or 4 pair of leaves were formed, and second when 3 or
4 pairs of leaves were formed on the first breaks. The plants were watered several times
immediately after planting and were watered only one other time. The plants were
fertilized twice during the summer.
A Records were kept on the beginning of the flowering period, the height, winter
hardiness, and public acceptance of each variety. Winter hardiness was recorded as the
percentage of the 10 original plants that had one or more green sprouts during the last ·
week of April. On October 10, forms were handed out to the public visiting the trial
garden. The public was asked to list their 10 favorite varieties. On page 12 are listed \
the 20 varieties which received the most votes. Although some varieties were past their
prime and others were not yet flowering, most of the varieties were in good condition
when ratings were made. Those varieties not in bloom on this date are listed as not in
bloom.
