Scope and Content
The Diaries of Salem, Indiana woman (dated 1899, 1921; 0.04 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprise two diaries that document the life of a woman working on farms around Salem, Indiana in the early twentieth century. The 1899 diary has only a few entries, but these entries discuss the daily weather, work done on various farms, including plowing fields, nailing boards, and picking fruit; and trips to nearby towns to sell farm goods. The 1921 diary covers similar topics, detailing the daily weather, planting and harvesting crops, and property maintenance, but also detail visits from friends, trips taken out of town, meetings attended, and in the back of the diary, the author lists addresses of friends and definitions of words.
The Diaries of Salem, Indiana woman are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
