Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The University of Kentucky was chartered in February of 1865 by the Kentucky Legislature, as the "Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky," a department established--pursuant to the terms of the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862 for the purpose of college-level training in agriculture and engineering--within Kentucky University, a private, sectarian institution in Lexington, Kentucky, organized at the same time. Ensuing denominational and theological controversies, as well as financial difficulties, prompted the Legislature to formally separate the College from the University in 1878, and the former, in 1880, began a century-and-a-quarter of development as an independent institution of higher education on the site of a municipal park and fairgrounds donated by the city of Lexington. The College was known as "State College" until 1908, when the Legislature changed the name to State University. At the same time, Kentucky University became Transylvania University. In 1916, the Legislature changed the university's name to University of Kentucky. The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), also known as the Student Army Training Corps (SATC), was set up in 1917 to provide instruction for military personnel participating in World War I. The University of Kentucky was part of this program.
- Louis Edward Nollau (1883-1955) was a professor in the College of Engineering at the State College of Kentucky from 1911-1953. Because of his interest in photography and the University, Nollau was the first "official" campus photographer. He photographed individuals, buildings, events and scenes on campus from 1904-1955.
- Harrison Garman (1856-1944) served as Entomologist and Botanist for the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station from 1889 to 1929 and as Kentucky State Entomologist from 1897 to 1929. Dr. Garman authored numerous articles, papers, and experiments which were published in the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station Bulletins.
- Alfred Meredith Peter (1857-1953) earned three degrees at the University of Kentucky--a bachelor's, a master's, and a doctorate--and joined the University of Kentucky staff in 1876 as an instructor. He stayed with the university for his entire career. In addition to serving as a professor and member of numerous committees, he also served as head of the Chemistry Department and as chief chemist/director for the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station. Outside of the university, Dr. Peter served as supervising chemist of the Kentucky Geological Survey. Following his retirement in 1929, he stayed involved with the university by accepting posts as professor emeritus and chemist emeritus.
- Scope and Content
- The University of Kentucky Glass Plate Negative Collection (dated 1887-1953, bulk 1898-1918; 42 cubic feet; 3854 items) consists of dry plate, silver nitrate glass negatives, and depict University of Kentucky buildings classes, sports teams, clubs, and individual and groups of faculty, staff, administrators, and students; as well as scenes in and around Lexington, Kentucky, including parades, farms, schools, events, buildings, streets, railroads, and landscapes. The photographs were taken by University of Kentucky professors, including Louis Edward Nollau, Harrison Garman, and Alfred M. Peter. The majority of the collection occurs over a 20-year span, from 1898 to 1918.
- Much of the collection focuses on life around University of Kentucky, documenting individual and groups of students, faculty, and administrators (some identified; others unidentified); classrooms; exteriors of buildings and grounds; electrical wiring; clubs, sororities, and fraternities; bands; athletic teams and athletes (especially football, track, men's basketball, and women's basketball); laboratories and experiments; commencements, convocations, and addresses; naturalization ceremonies; and military life (inlucing the Reserve Officer Training Corps/Student Army Training Corps hosted at the university during World War I). The military images include various companies in formation; practicing drills; studying semaphors, electrical, blacksmithing, mechanics, woodworking, and radio; getting on and off trucks and trains; enlisting; and ceremonies. Some of the soldiers and officers are identified. There are also a series of negatives of 442 unidentified men enrolled in the military.
- Images in and around Lexington, Kentucky, include parades and events; farming, fields, crops; houses; commercial buildings; railroad stations and tracks, such as the Queen & Crescent line; bridges; boats; crossroads; and streets.
