Collection Overview

Biography / History
Photographer Mary Tanner Waldack (b. 1847) was born in Woodford County, Kentucky, to Andrew Tanner and Nancy Wilson Tanner. She married Belgian photographer Charles Waldack (who was 20 years her senior) between 1870 and 1880. Charles Waldack (1829-1882) notably used magnesium and gunpowder flash to photograph Mammoth Cave in 1866. Mary took over Charles' studio in Cincinnati in 1881 after he left on an extended visit to Belgium, where he died in 1882. Mary Tanner Waldack owned and operated the studio until at least 1893.
