Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Keystone Company, the producer of this set of stereograph cards, was the largest producer of stereographic viewers from 1892-1970. Based in Meadville, Pennsylvania, the company was founded by Benneville L. Singley, who also photographed many of the views the company published, himself. Keystone, which bought out all competitors, also went by the names Keyvuco, Presco and J.I. Austen Co., and others.
- The cards used with the viewers were generally sold in sets of 50, 100, or 200 while the 1927 Televiewer and Telebinocular would be sold with sets of 100, 300, 600, or 1200 views. In 1897, views, or cards, were sixteen and two-thirds cents each, two viewers cost ninety cents each, and the case they were kept in cost five dollars--a considerable amount of money for the time. Keystone also ran a lending library through the mail, with which customers could borrow views for twenty-five cents each.
- In addition to the previously mentioned models, there were also the Keystone Junior and School Viewer models, which were smaller. In the 1960s, Keystone sold models of their viewers as a tool for eye correction exercises to be done in the home.
