- Biography / History
- The Vandersteen family of Bethnal Green, London, England included Jacob Vandersteen (1749-1799), his wife Mary Ashworth (1752-1838), and their seven children, Jacob (b. 1773), Mary (1779-1868), Elizabeth (b. 1781), William (1782-1846), Elizabeth (b. 1785), Isabella (b. 1788), and John (b. 1790). Jacob worked as a victualler (liquor provider). Jacob's son, William, married Henrietta May (b. 1787) in 1810, and together the couple had four sons, William John (1811-1882), Charles (b. 1813), John (1818-1822), and George (1824-1907). William worked as a house agent in Bethnal Green. Two sons, William John and George, immigrated to the United States by the 1880s and lived in Illinois.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Vandersteen family papers (dated 1793-1799, undated; 0.04 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises papers that document the genealogy of the Vandersteen family of England and Illinois at the end of the eighteenth century. The papers include lists of birth, death, and marriage dates; when wills were executed for deceased family members, information about potential distant relatives, immigration information, and information on people who married into the family. Also in the collection is the will for Jacob Vandersteen, and the subsequent execution of the will, marked by the Bishop of London.
- The Vandersteen family papers collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
