- Elvira Wakefield Cowherd was born around 1874 in Greensburg, Kentucky, to John and Mandy Wakefield. She married Matt Cowherd (b. 1874) of Greensburg in 1894. They had one child named Estella Cowherd (b. 1895). By 1930, they lived in Louisville, Kentucky. Elvira worked as a laundry washer and Matt as a blacksmith. Elvira’s brother, John H. Wakefield (b. 1895) married Sarah Wakefield and had two sons: John A. Wakefield and Freddie Wakefield. By 1910, the family lived in Omaha, Nebraska, and John H. Wakefield worked as a machinist at a packing company. William Wakefield was a nephew of Elvira and her brother John H. Wakefield. In 1920 he lived with John H. Wakefield in Omaha, Nebraska, working as a laborer at a packing company.

- The Cowherd family photographs (dated undated; 0.02 cubic feet; 22 items) includes 8 postcards, 3 cabinet cards, 3 tintypes, and 7 silver gelatin prints belonging to the Cowherd family of Greensburg, Kentucky. The photos feature individual, as well as group shots of the family. Some members of the family are identified in these images. Most identified images show the family of Elvira Cowherd's brother, John H. Wakefield. The collection contains one confirmed image of Elvira's daughter, Estella Cowherd.
