 The Marita Garin papers (dated 1940s-2016, undated; 0.45 cubic feet; 1 box) consists of autobiographical information, correspondence, manuscripts, publications, awards, contracts, and photographs relating to the education and creative writing career of Appalachian poet Marita Garin. The papers primarily consists of correspondence between Marita Garin and various publishers and drafts of poems submitted for publication. Additionally, the papers contain information relating to her Tennessee Arts Commission Fellowship and her North Carolina Arts Arts Council Fellowship; her Masters of Fine Arts at Goddard College; and contain her two theses  Dogwood Tree: a Collection of Poems  (MFA, Goddard College, Plainfield, Vt., 1979) and  Leo Tolstoy and Existentialism  (MA, Lamar State College of Technology, Beaumont, Tx., 1962). Also includes photos of Garin and an autobiographical essay.

     Biographical note 
 Marita Garin (b. 1936, Missoula, Montana) is a poet and teacher of writing.  She has spent the majority of her adult life in Appalachia, including Johnson City, Tenn., Henderson, N.C., and Black Mountain, N.C.  She received her BA in English Literature from Auburn University (1959), her MA in English from Lamar State College of Technology (1962), and her MFA in creative writing from Goddard College (1979).  She was awarded an Arts Fellowship by the Tennessee Arts Commission and a Writers Fellowship by the North Carolina Arts Council.  She is the editor of Southern Appalachian Poetry: An Anthology of Works by 27 Poets (McFarland and Co., 2008).
