- David Francis Crawford was born on December 4, 1864, to David and Martha Frances Crawford in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Crawford worked in the railroad industry in a variety of roles starting in 1882 in the freight department of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He trained and worked as machinist until 1895 when he became an assistant superintendent for the Pennsylvania Lines West. During his career with the Pennsylvania railroad, he served as general superintendent and general manager of the Pennsylvania Lines West. In 1918, he became vice-president of the Locomotive Stoker Company, where he patented a number of devices for railway cars, engines, and signals, including the Crawford Underfeed Stoker. He received an honorary doctorate in engineering from the University of Kentucky in 1915.

- The David Francis Crawford papers (dated 1889-1927, undated; 0.9 cubic feet; 2 boxes) contain blueprints, test results, project notes, and reports David Francis Crawford collected throughout his career as a railroad machinist and superintendent. Crawford’s project notes include tests on numerous aspects of railcars, engine systems, drawings of inventions, reports, and blueprints conducted during his time at the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. The notes have been arranged using a numbering system that was printed on each report by Crawford. The reports include companies such as The Pennsylvania Railroad, Pacific Railroad Company, General Electric, and others. Additionally, The collection also contains budget reports for the Locomotive Stoker Company from 1921-1927.
