- Biography / History
- General Edward Henry Hobson (1825-1901) was born in Greensburg, Kentucky. He served in the United States military during the Mexican War in 1846 and fought in the Battle of Buena Vista in 1847. He fought for the Union Army during the Civil War, serving from 1861 until 1865. After receiving a commission as a brigadier general, Hobson pursued John Hunt Morgan during Morgan's Raid in 1863. Following the Civil War, Hobson ran unsuccessfully for multiple public offices and was the president of the Southern Division of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.
- Scope and Content
- The General Edward H. Hobson papers (dated 1863-1872; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 folder) contains correspondence, financial materials, and a field report composed during the Civil War. The field report consists of Hobson's firsthand report of the pursuit and capture of Confederate forces under the command of John Hunt Morgan. Hobson wrote the field report during the summer of 1863 about the trek through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio following of Morgan and his men.
