1937 Flood. Federal WPA Administrator Harry L. Hopkins at a conference of state and local officials in Louisville, KY, on Friday, February 5, 1937, outlined the clean-up, sanitation and repair programs which would be undertaken in Kentucky by the Works Progress Administration. Reports on the flood relief work were given by the Hon. A.B. Chandler, Governor of Kentucky; Louisville Mayor Neville Miller; State WPA Administrator George H. Goodman; A.L. Shaeffer, in charge of the Red Cross disaster work in Kentucky; Dr. A.T. McCormack, Director of the State Board of Health; and Dr. Hugh Rodman Leavell, City of Louisville Health Director. Those from Washington present at the conference besides Mr. Hopkins were Gen. F.X. Markham, Chief of the U.S. Army Engineers; Col. F.C. Harrington, Chief Engineer of the WPA; and Jos. L. Feiser, National Vice President of the American Red Cross. Howard Hunter, Bruce Uthus and George H. Fields, Regional WPA officials also attended the meeting
