- Scope and Content
- The Sherman Addison Chubbuck diary (dated 1861-1865; 0.04 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises one diary that documents the life and work of Methodist minister Sherman Chubbuck in Minnesota during the Civil War. The diary includes pre-designed portions where Chubbuck was able to fill in the blanks with information pertaining to his congregation including the number of members, deaths, baptisms, Sunday-schools, conversions, and amount of money donated by parishioners. Chubbuck also lists the names of funerals he attended, sermons preached, members and friends, costs incurred, and periodical subscribers. In the diary portion, Chubbuck writes about parishioners and colleagues he visited in various towns, the weather, talks given, views on the Civil War and the secessionist states, and the interactions between the white community and the Native Americans. Chubbuck mentions a resolution passed by a Methodist congregation calling for the suppression of the secessionists, a devotion to ending slavery through the church's material aid and sympathy, and discussion of the Sioux Indian Uprising.
- The Sherman Addison Chubbuck diary is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
