- Biography / History
- Soldier, painter. Price was born in Nicholasville, Ky. He studied painting and portraiture under Oliver Frazer. During much of the Civil War, Price served as a colonel in the Union Army, commanding the 21st Regiment, Kentucky Volunteers. He was wounded in the battle of Kennesaw Mountain in 1864, and in 1865 was promoted to brevet brigadier general. After the war he achieved prominence as a portrait painter.
- Scope and Content
- These papers primarily concern Price's service during the Civil War. There are numerous military orders and other communications. Later papers include letters sent to Washington officials recommending Price for appointment as consul to Switzerland and as surveyor for the port of Louisville. There are also a few letters written by Price, one written to William T. Sherman by Mrs. Price, and Sherman's reply to her. There is also one letter written by Mrs. Price's brother, Robert C. Thompson, while he was being held prisoner by the Union forces in Camp Douglas, Illinois.
