Collection Overview

Biography / History
Christine (Long) Wininger (1914-1994) was born in Horse Cave, Kentucky to Ed and Maude Long. She married Louis J. Wininger (1914-1981), from Altoona, Pennsylvania. Christine worked as a janitor for the Kentucky Home Mutual Life Insurance Company and Louis was in the U.S. Army from 1937 to 1944, later finding work as a security guard for the Merchant Police Service in Louisville, Kentucky. Christine had one brother, Harry Long (1905-1983), who lived and worked on the family farm in Barren County, Kentucky.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Christine (Long) Wininger letters (dated 1942-1976, bulk 1942-1967; 0.45 cubic feet; 1 box) comprise letters that document the relationships between family members, farm matters, oil and gas leases, controversy over their mother's estate, attempts to be discharged from the Army, and employment conditions for family members. The majority of the letters are from Harry Long, sent to Christine and Louis, first discussing his attempts to be discharged from the army for medical reasons and eventually discussing his day-to-day life on the farm and all the issues that came with. There are some letters from Maude Long (her mother) to Christine about her daily life in Horse Cave, Kentucky up until Maude's death in 1952 as well as a few photographs and newspaper clippings.
The Christine (Long) Wininger letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
