Collection Overview

Biography / History
John F. Keith a farmer in Indiana (1858-1938) and wife Elona M. Jones Keith (1862-1948) had children Carrie Keith Bunger (1883-1956), Olin Keith (1885-1967), Edith Keith Cash (1892-1972), and Ruth M. Keith VanDolah (1899-1979). Carrie Keith married farmer Clayton Bunger (1884-1970) and the couple had two children, Naomi Bunger Yeaman (1911- 2012) and Flora Alberta Bunger (1917-unkown). Olin Keith, a farmer, married Isola Rand Keith (1894-1970) and had children Jay Keith (1913-2002), Junita M. Keith Allison (1911-2003), Donald Keith (1915-1979), Wilma Keith Welch (1917-1990), and Norman Keith (1919-2009). Edith Keith married farmer, foreman, and trackman Edgar S. Cash (1893-1979) with whom she had children Eugene Cash (1919-1993), Arnold Edward Cash (1922-1981), Dale Cash (1924-1993), Virginia Cash (1927-2003), Llewellyn Stanley Cash (1929-unkown), Shirley Jean Cash (1931-unkown), and Paul Cash (1934-unkown). Ruth Keith married Robert Wayne VanDolah (1891-1965), a laborer and mechanic, with whom she had two children, Francis Wayne VanDolah (1918-1993) and Hazel Ruth VanDolah Cole (1920-1990). Hazel VanDolah married Odis Lindle Cole and had child Lindle Keith Cole (1949-1991).
The Keith family lived in various counties throughout Indiana such as Dillsboro, Switzerland, Decatur, Ripley, and Dearborn. Between 1920 and 1930 Robert and Ruth VanDolah moved to Louisville, Kentucky for Robert's job as a mechanic at the Coca Cola Bottling Company. They both lived in Louisville, Kentucky until their deaths.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Ruth Keith family papers (dated 1882-1961, undated; 0.26 cubic feet; 3 boxes) consist of letters, diaries, certificates, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook, ephemera, and photographs that document the lives of the Keith family, natives of Indiana. Many of the items were created by or belonged to family member Ruth Keith. The collection is divided into two subseries. The first, Letters and other documents, consists of a diary and scrapbook belonging to Ruth Keith, letters and postcards, Hazel VanDolah's handwriting proficiency certificates, a valentine from Rowena Connors, a funeral announcement for Agnes Woodward, and a card with the name John H. Henschen. Ruth Keith's diary includes drawings, poetry, newspapers clippings, a photograph, and diary entries about family, friends and daily activities such as local events, weather, canning, and other topics. Topics covered in the letters and postcards include daily life, weather, gardening, events, family member and friend activities, illness, and well wishes. The postcards contain pictures of people and places, some identified and others unidentified. The Photographs series contains photographs of family and friends, gravestones, animals, and various locations. Many photographs are of unidentified individuals. Those shown in in the photographs include Ruth Keith, Carrie Keith, Isola Keith, Juanita Keith, Jay Keith, Don Keith, Eda (Edith) Keith Cash, Lindle Keith Cole, Cheryl Marie Cole, Naomi, Kate Reacher, Hazel Mildred Brown, Jewel Bryan and Oliver, Robert G. Crutcher, Chase Rogers Moors, Jessie Smith, and Rowena Connors. Locations in the photographs include the Coca Cola Bottling Company at 16th and Hill; Indiana; Canada; Ohio; Kentucky; and New York.
The Ruth Keith family papers are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
