Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Preston-Johnston family included Confederate general and diplomat William Preston (1816-1887) and his father, Major William Preston, a Revolutionary War officer and U.S. Congressman. General Preston married Margaret Wickliffe and their son, Robert Wickliffe Preston, married Sarah Brant McDowell, granddaughter of Virginia Governor and Congressman James McDowell. Their daughter, Margaret Preston, married Philip Preston Johnston II.
- Scope and Content
- The Preston-Johnston family papers (dated 1755-1965; 42 cubic feet; 93 boxes, 1 item, 1 folder) consists of correspondence, legal documents, genealogies, financial materials, business records, and diaries relating to members of the Preston-Johnston family of Lexington, Kentucky, including Revolutionary War veteran Major William Preston and his son Confederate general and diplomat William Preston (1816-1887). Folders labeled only by date contain correspondence from that date range; otherwise contents are reflected by the title of the folder.
- The collection contains records from the Benton-Brant family, Margaret, Robert Wickliffe and Philip Preston Johnson I, II, and III, Robert D. Johnson, Brant, Mary, Susan and James McDowell, William S. Potts, Sarah McDowell Preston, and Wickliffe and General William Preston. Several of the oldest items are legal and military documents which belonged to Major William Preston. In addition, there are manuscripts relating to General William Preston which reflect the personal side of his family life. Documents and correspondence generated by or relating to relatives and descendants of General Preston comprise a large portion of this accession. Mementos, letters, diaries, and business records provide a glimpse of their religious beliefs, attitudes toward family, war, and politics.
- The collection includes the will of U.S. Congressman Benjamin Howard; church records from the Second Presbyterian Church of St. Louis; diaries of Presbyterian minister William Potts, Margaret Preston Johnston and Sarah Brant McDowell Preston; letters by James McDowell written while he served in Congress; Civil War letters by Dr. Eugene Johnston (surgeon, U.S. Army) describing conditions in Chattanooga, TN; and the papers of Civil War major, Lexington attorney and Kentucky Adjutant General, Philip Preston Johnston.
