Collection Overview

Biography / History
Kate Helm Buckner (1907-1989) was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Thomas K. Helm (1874-1939) and Elizabeth T. Nelson (1879-1956). By 1940, she was married to Hubbard George Buckner, Jr. (1905-1997). Hubbard worked as a vice president for the Louisville Trust Company.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Kate Helm Buckner papers (dated 1925-1930, 1958-1965, undated; 0.21 cubic feet; 6 folders) comprises diaries, papers, itineraries, and telegrams that document the travels by Kate Helm Buckner across the United States and Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. The diaries document trips to Italy, Philadelphia, New York, Florida, Montana, Iowa, Illinois, Scotland, Belgium, and Germany. She describes who she travels with, people she meets along her journeys, how she liked or disliked her accommodations, the weather, and sights and attractions visited. The itineraries detail the modes of transportation taken to reach destinations, if she is traveling with anyone, and specific attractions she plans to visit. The papers include receipts of good purchased, business cards, maps, currency exchange information, advertisements, and notes of places and costs of items. The telegrams discuss the health of relatives and sending Kate money for her travels.
The Kate Helm Buckner papers collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
