Collection Overview

Biography / History
Soldier, author, historian. John A. Lewis was born at "Bel-air" near Frankfort, Ky. in 1841. He attended public schools in Franklin County, Ky. and received his B. A. degree from Georgetown College (Georgetown, Ky.) in 1862. One month after his graduation Lewis enlisted in Company I, Second Kentucky Cavalry, Colonel John H. Morgan's Regiment. For two and half years Lewis served in the Ninth Kentucky Regiment under Morgan as he made his raids through Kentucky and Tennessee.
After the war, John A. Lewis began teaching and at the same time took up the study of medicine. Lewis entered the Medical College of Virginia at Richmond in 1866, graduated in 1868 and returned to Kentucky to practice medicine near Frankfort. In 1869 he began practicing in Georgetown, Ky. where he remained until his retirement in 1909. Lewis served as a trustee of Georgetown College (1875-1909) and as chairman of the board of trustees from 1896 to 1908. He also served as president of the Society of Morgan's Men as well as being president of the Kentucky Medical Society in 1896.
Scope and Content
These materials consist of Civil War documents, personal narratives and typescript sketches of John A. Lewis as well as newspaper clippings regarding his life and involvement with the Ninth Kentucky Cavalry. Perhaps the most significant papers in this collection are those personal narratives that document the engagements, movements and battles of Lewis' company, particularly the period of time during which his company was under the command of W. C. P. Breckinridge in the regiment of General John Hunt Morgan.
Although the part that Lewis played in the war was a humble one and his career as a soldier was less than brilliant, he never-the-less was a faithful and devoted soldier who later wrote many narratives and sketches of his experiences during the war. Various newspaper clippings of historical articles about the Ninth Kentucky Cavalry and articles concerning the death of John A. Lewis are present as well as several typed sketches by Lewis.
Among the typescripts are "Sketch of the Early fe and Service in the Confederate Army of Dr. John A. Lewis of Georgetown, Kentucky", "A Full Sketch of the Organization and Service of the Ninth Regiment of Kentucky Cavalry C. S. A.", "A Sketch of the Part Taken By the Kentucky Cavalry Brigade, Commanded by Col. W. C. P. Breckinridge in the Defeat and Capture of General George Stoneman of the Federal Army near Atlanta, Georgia in August, 1864" and "Morgan's Christmas Raid". Also present in the collection is a published work, "A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE REV. CADWALLADER LEWIS, OF BEL-AIR, FRANKLIN COUNTY, KY.", by his son, John A. Lewis; as well as other miscellaneous materials.
Microfilm. September, 1987.
