Collection Overview

Biography / History
Dwight L. Mikkelson was a graduate student at University of Kentucky in 1954 and 1955. He studied history and was interested in the orreries (planetariums) that Kentucky-born inventor Thomas Harris Barlow (1789-1865) and his son, Milton K. Barlow constructed in the nineteenth century.
Scope and Content
The Dwight L. Mikkelson collection on Thomas Harris Barlow (dated 1954-1955, undated; 0.15 cubic feet; 1 box) consists of material gathered by Dwight Lawrence Mikkelson on inventor Thomas Harris Barlow during research for his M. A. degree in history at the University of Kentucky. The bulk of the papers consist of Mikkelson's correspondence with university libraries, planetariums, and Barlow family members in an attempt to document the inventor's activities. The collection also contains two photographs of a planetarium given to General Robert E. Lee by admiring Kentuckians after the Civil War. Lee donated the planetarium to Washington and Lee University for use in an astrology class taught by professor Barlow.
