 NASH COUNTY
Formed, 1777, from Edgecombe County. Named for Francis
Nash (b. 1742—d. 1777), Revolutionary general. In northwestern
I coastal section of state. Area: 586 square miles. Population:
, 1850——10,651; 1900-25,478; 1930-52,782, of whom 29,286 were
; white and 23,456 Negro. Chief crops: tobacco, cotton, and corn.
Chief industrial products: yarn and cotton goods. Chief city:
Rocky Mount, tobacco market and railroad center, located in
both Nash and Edgecombe counties; population, 1930, 21,412, of
, whom 11,390 were in Nash county.
Nashville, county seat. A temporary courthouse erected 1778
and used until a permanent structure was completed in 1784.
The third courthouse was erected near site of the second, 1833.
· Present courthouse erected on same site, completed in 1923.
Present courthouse two-story building with four small an-
nexes. Courthouse proper T-shaped building; approximate exte-
rior dimensions: 120’ long x 90’ wide (rear) x 54’ wide (front) x
40' high. Constructed of brick with floors and stairways of wood.
Fire-resistant but not fireproof. On first floor: offices of Register,
Clerk, Sheriff, Treasurer, and Auditor and vaults of Register
and Clerk. On second floor: courtroom and rooms for judge,
juries, solicitor, and attorneys. In basement: vaults of Register
and Clerk. Annex west of courthouse has grand jury room and
— office of Alcoholic Beverage Control Board on second floor; first
I floor is rented to private parties. Annex north of courthouse has
j offices of Superintendent of Health, Home Demonstration Agent,
t and local unit of State Highway and Public Works Commission
t on first floor; jail is on second floor. Annex northeast of court-
house has office of Superintendent of Schools on second floor;
first floor is rented to private parties. Annex east of courthouse
has office of Agricultural Extension Agent on first floor; remain-
der of building is rented to private parties. All annexes are con-
structed of brick and are fire-resistant but not fireproof.
Records of Register and Clerk kept in fireproof vaults. Storage
conditions excellent except that earlier papers in Clerk’s office
j * are not filed; accommodations for users adequate. Records of
other officers kept in respective offices; Treasurer’s records are
kept in a safe in office. Storage conditions good except for fire
hazards, and accommodations for users satisfactory. Records of
Superintendent of Public Welfare kept in wooden building on
