- Biography / History
- General. A native of Greensburg, Ky, Hobson went into business with his father, William, an owner of steamers and a merchant. He joined the army and served as a lieutenant during the war with Mexico from 1846-1847. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Union Army. He became a Brigadier General whose most famous exploit was the pursuit of General John Hunt Morgan nearly 900 miles through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio during Morgan's 1863 raid. While he did not receive the surrender of Morgan and his command, Hobson captured five guns and 575 men. After the war, Hobson continued his business interests in lumber real estate, and merchandise and was named Collector of Internal Revenue of the Fourth District by President Ulysses S. Grant. He was active in various veterans organizations, including the Mexican War veterans and the Veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic.
- Scope and Content
- The collection consists primarily of letters written to General Hobson in the 1880's and 1890's concerning political recommendations and meetings of veterans organizations. There are letters received from James K. Patterson, Edwin Forbes, Thomas Speed, J. T. Boyle, Oscar Turrell, and President William McKinley. There are also a number of letters written either during the Civil War, or written at a later date but concerned with the Civil War. The collection contains the Quartermaster's Returns for October and December 1863 and February and March, 1864, and a claim book entitled, "Claims of owners for compensation of owners of slaves who were enlisted in the Federal Army."
- There are two interesting documents. One is the certificate when Hobson was appointed collector of the Internal Revenue-Fourth District of Kentucky - April 5, 1869, by Ulysses S. Grant. The other is dated April 15, 1863, appointing E. H. Hobson Brigadier General by Abraham Lincoln.
- There is also some family correspondence with nephew William, son John and daughter Betty, who lived in Danville, Ky.
