Collection Overview

Biography / History
Mary "Mollie" Susan Blassingame was born in February 1838, in Madison County, Alabama. She was the daughter of Robert Blassingame (1794-1870) and Alice Blassingame (1804-1870). Blassingame spent her childhood in Alabama and later moved to Texas. In 1857, she married Augustus D. Russell (1836-1912); they had four children, including her last child Ward Russell. Blassingame died in February 1911, in Kaufman, Tx.
Scope and Content
The Mollie Blassingame herbarium (dated 1855 June 23; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 item) comprises a handwritten herbarium that documents plant life in Texas. It pairs dried plants with their classifications, occasionally including poetry and quotations. Blassingame created the herbarium while attending the Moulton Female Institute of Moulton, Texas.
