y to advance to the Sweet 16. Tayshaun Prince led the Cats with a career-high 41 points. The senior
sively for the Cats to be successful against Maryland Friday.

Assocurso recs:
Gary Williams led Maryland to the Final Four last year, and his Terps
earned 3 No.1 seed this season and won the ACC regular-season title.

Starter versus starter

Point guard: Steve Blake. a junior, versus Cliff Hawkins, a sophomore. Blake is
more athletic than he looks and can subtly control the tempo. He has good size at
6-3 and leads the nation in assists with more than eight per game. Blake is a bet-
ter shooter. but Hawkins is more explosive and more dangerous off the dribble.

Edge: Blake's Final Four experience gives him the advantage.

Off guard: Juan Dixon, a senior, versus Keith Bogans, a junior. The 6-foot-3,
l68-pound Dixon is small for a Z-guard, but his quickness and shooting ability
more than compensate. He's the Terps’ best scorer and defender. Bogans is not
the pure shooter Dixon is, but he has been hot in UK's last two games. The 6-
foot-S. EDS-pounds Bogans can be more physical than Dixon.

Edge: Dixon was a first team All~American and ACC player of the year.

Swingman: Byron Mouton, a senior, versus Tayshaun Prince, a senior. Prince
always poses matchup problems, and Maryland is no exception. Prince is three
inches taller than the 6-foot-6 M0uton. Mouton is a solid defender, but Prince's
versatility should give him the advantage. if Maryland chooses to defend Prince
Wlth the 6-foot‘l0 Chris Wilcox, Prince can use his quickness.

Edge: Prince. No one else has put up 41 pornts in the tournament thus far.
Power forward: Lonny Baxter, a senior, versus Chuck Hayes, a freshman.
Baxter is Maryland's best post player and more experienced than Hayes. Hayes
has banged wrth Florida's Udonis Haslem and SEC Player of the Year Erwin Dud-
ley of Alabama. Hayes has had success but is not gomg to dominate the position.

Edge: Baxter. Hayes could neutralize the senior. but experience goes a long way.

Centen Chris Wilcox, a sophomore, versus Jules Camara, a junior. Both are
raw athletes. Camara has more shooting range, but Wilcox is more effective in
the post. Camara's aggressiveness as a shot blocker can be a liability for the
Cats on defense and on the boards.

Edge: Wilcox gets the nod because he is stronger in the post.

Bench versus bench

Talent: Maryland JUTHOT forward Tan) Holden is an athletic big man that at-
tacks the rim. The talent drop~off from Baxter and Wilcox is minimal. Drew
Nicholas IS a capable backup at both guard positions. UK has talent at every po-
srtion off the bench with Marquis Estill and Gerald Fitch leading the way.

Depth: UK has four non-starters who combined for 40 starts. Freshman Rashaad
Carruth, the Cats' best shooter. helps UK go 10 deep. Maryland goes eight deep with
only Holden and Nicholas averaging double~figure minutes off the bench.

Edge: UK The Cats‘ quantity and quality gives them the advantage.

Coach versus coach

Postseason leadership: Gary Williams led Maryiand to its first Final Four last
season, but the leros want more. Tubby Smith gurded the cats through a tumul-
tuous season. but Cat fans always want more. Both have solid tournament
records. Smith holds the advantage at 20-7 compared with Williams” 17-ll,
Smith’s l998 National Championship trumps Williams' 200i Final Four run.

Edge: Smith. He's proven he can win the big one in a pressure-packed situation.

Final tally

Edge: Maryland 4-3. The Terps have the talent. and the Cats have the intangibles.
All information compied by W‘il Messer, Travis Wit and Steve Jones.

No. 3 Pittsburgh Panthers (29-5)

Coach: Ben Howland. NCAA Tournament record: Z-l.

Top dog: Brandin Knight, junior guard. Knight was CG'BIQ East MVP and an Associated Press All-America
third team selection.

Unsung hero: Jaron Brown, sophomore guard. Brown, a Lexrngton native and Bryan Station grad, led the
Panthers in rebounding (6.l rpg).

Who needs to step up: Chad Johnson, senior guard, Johnson is Pitt's lone senior and needs to provide
some leadership.

Strengths: Ouickness and perimeter defense.

Weaknesses: Free throw shooting and NCAA experience.

Outlook: lf Knight IS on, Pitt Is tough to heat A matchup against Duke 3
Williams would be interesting to see.

Bottom line: The Panthers overachieved and were a surprise team all yea.
but If they handle Cinderella Kent State it should not be a surprise.

Unsung hero. Take your pick Most notably; unior forward Antonio Gates who scored 22 paints and grabbed
10 rebounds against UK in November

Who needs to step up: Nate GerWIg, freshman center. GerWIg l6-9i and fellow freshman John Edwards (7-0)
are Kent State's only players with size.

Strengths: Stability. The Golden Flashes’ confidence can't be shaken

Weaknesses: Size, interior scoring and inexperience.

Outlook: The Golden Flashes match up well With Pittsburgh and could be Gonzaga's Cinderella replacement
at this years Big Dance.

Bottom line: Kent State proved they can beat goick teams by handling Alabama and Oklahoma State. The
next task is Pitts Brandin Knight

No. 3 Arizona Wildcats (24-9)

Coach: Lute Olson. NCAA Tournament record: 32-16.

national runner-up team. He's paced the Wildcats all year, averaging more than 20 pomts per game.

Unsung hero: Luke Walton, iunior forward The versatile Walton went from sixth man to one of the
premiere players in the Pac-lO. which he led in aSSlSiS

Who needs to step up: Channing Frye and l5Iah Fox. freshmen centers. The pair must get on the boards and
establish an Iri5ide presence.

Strengths: Shooting, quickness and coaching Gardner has a deadly Jumper. and the Wildcats run the break
as well as any team in the country. Olson has been here before and knows how to wm

Weaknesses: lExperience. Olson knows how to Win, but does his young team7

Outlook: Arizona Wlil look to run and open up the floor against a gritty
Oklahoma team that knows how to defend

No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners (29-4) w.

Top dog: Hollis Price, junior guard Price exploded on the scene to earn first-

two games of the Sconers' NCAA run He averaged 26 pomts per game in the first two rounds

Who needsto step up: Ebi Ere. iunior forward Ere's shooting makes him a threat, but he has the potential
to go cold and leave Sampson looking for answers.

Strengths: Team unity The balanced Sooners have come from nowhere in the preseason to the current
Final Four favorite In the West Region.

Weaknesses: The up-tempo game. Although 0U has been strong on the break so far this year, keeping up
With ‘Zona and the shiftiness of Jason Gardner is a hefty challenge

Outlook: With Cinry's loss In the second round the selection committee must realize 0U should be No l,

Bottom line: The clutch Sooners should slip past the youthful Wildcats tor the Elite Eight

Strengths: Leadership and Final Four experience.

Weaknesses: Depth. The Terps only go seven deep

Outlook: Besides Maryland’s fallout In the ACC Tournament against N C. State
the Teips were arguably better than Duke They won the regular-season title

About IOpm Friday

No. 4 Kentucky Wildcats (22-9)

Coach: Tubby Smith. NCAA Tournament record; 20-7.

Unsung hero: Chuck Hayes. freshman forward. Hayes accepted a limited role early 'l the season and his
hard work and consistency earned him a starting spot.

Who needs to step up: Keith Bogans, JUDIOT guard. Bogans regained last year s Ali SEC form in the first two
rounds of this year’s tournament He must continue to play well if the Cats hope to advance

Strengths: Depth and coaching, The Cats can go lO-deep and against Valparaiso and Tuisii Smith proved
once again that he‘s one of the premiere postseason coaches in the country

Weaknesses: lnconsrstency. UK hasn’t won more than two games in a row since mid-January

Outlook: UK is playing its best ball of the season and seems to play to the level 3‘ its opponent

Students walk by steam rising from the ground. Jack Applegate.
director of the UK Physical Plant, said the substantial amount of
rainfall that Lexington has experienced lately causes large amounts of
moisture to accumulate on underground steam pipes, causing steam to
rise to the surface.

While Eastern and Central Kentucky have been under flood warn-
ings, the wafers haven't flooded any campus buildings. Applegate said
a few campus buildings were suffering roof leaks. Buildings have flood-
ed in the past, but typically it takes a huge amount rain in a short time
to flood a building, Applegate said.

Campus buildings are connected to the city storm sewer system
and in addition. a system of underground caves runs underneath the
campus, Applegate said. Heavy rains can overpower these systems.
causing flooding.

Students walking to class encountered soggy paths. The band field
was saturated and large puddles formed in various parts of campus.

"There's a lot of water out there. It's not much fun going to class
with wet shoes. socks and jeans," said Shelly Goe an undeclared fresh—
man.
