The Charles E. Lowther collection on Mining (dated 1920-1977; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) consists of microfilmed legal agreements between coal operators and labor, by-laws, an employee handbook, pay receipts, and union political ephemera. The by-laws of Local Union No. 862 of the United Mine Workers, District No, 23 (Madisonville,Ky.) are present along with the Jeffrey Mining Machinery Handbook, No. 294 (Jeffrey Manufacturing Company, Columbus, Ohio, 1920). Also included are pay receipts (Williams Coal Company, Madisonville, Ky.) of Edgar Lowther (October 1, 1943- January 16, 1950) and election memorabilia, June 1969-June 14, 1977. The legal agreements include the following: Agreement Between Members of the Western Kentucky Coal Operators Association and Their Employees, District No. 23 (Central City, Ky.), April 1, 1939-April 1, 1941; Agreement Between Members of the Tri-County Coal Operators Association and Their Employees, District No. 23 (Madisonville, Ky.), August 1, 1941-July 31, 1943 and April 1, 1945; and National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1947.
