Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Barnett was from Maysville, Kentucky, and worked as a schoolteacher. Little is known about him, other than he taught in Germantown, Kentucky in the 1850s. He was an educated and religious man of Christian faith Dr. Barnett may have had a relationship with Miss Jane Brough (1833-1902) to whom he dedicatede a poem in the diary.
- Scope and Content
- The Dr. David William Barnett diary (dated 1851-1857; 0.02 cubic feet; 1 folder) records Barnett's personal and local events in the area of Germantown, Kentucky, during the 1850s. His earliest entries detail his search for a teaching job. He traveled to numerous towns in Kentucky until he secured a position in Germantown where he had the opportunity to teach 30 scholars. His poetic journal entries, occasional poems, and acrostics dedicated to women reflect his education and romantic nature. He also wrote poems to instruct his students on how to compose rhymes. He frequently mentioned the weather and wrote about a winter so cold that a woman froze to death as well as a beautiful spring unraveling with blooming trees. In addition, he occasionally details sermons and Psalms discussed in church.
- Toward the end of his journal, Dr. Barnett describes a neighborhood affair where a school professor, Mr. Yant, murdered his students' father during an altercation regarding what the father considered harsh teaching methods.
