Collection Overview

Biography / History
Aria Schawe (1903-1985) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Edward Schawe (1871-1925) and Addie Schawe (1877-1948); she had one younger brother, Edward Parke Schawe (1905-1951). She attended both the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, and Columbia University in New York City from which she received a Bachelor of Letters (B.Lit.) degree from the School of Journalism in 1926. She returned home to Cincinnati after completing the program and became a high school English teacher; Schawe never married and passed away in 1985.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Aria Schawe letters (dated 1880-1940, bulk 1923-1929; 0.2 cubic feet; 9 folders) comprise letters between Schawe and her mother and friends that document sorority and fraternity life, and entertainment and dating in New York City in the mid-to-late 1920s. Correspondence to her mother details her activities as a college student at Columbia University and the attributes she looks for in a man. Other letters discuss the impact of children to a woman's life and there are a small number of letters between Schawe and Virginia McVey, daughter of the former University of Kentucky President Frank LeRond McVey.
The Aria Schawe letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
