Collection Overview

Biography / History
Paul Morand, born in Paris, France on March 13, 1888, became a novelist and modernist poet after his early work in the 1920s. His work throughout his career tended to be marked by his vivid narrative style. Morand, after travelling around the world and marrying his wife, Hélène Soutzo, by 1927, eventually grew increasingly active with politics in France. At the start of World War II, he joined the Vichy government as an ambassador to Romania and became the president of the Commission for Film Censorship in 1943. Following the war, Morand continued to write, but was largely shunned due to his involvement with the government that welcomed Nazi Germany's occupation of France in the early 1940s. During his career, Morand published over 30 memoirs and collections of poems. After two unsuccessful attempts, Morand was eventually elected to the prestigious Académie Française in 1968. 8 years later on July 3, Paul Morand died in Paris and was buried with his wife in Italy.
Scope and Content
The Paul Morand papers (dated 1927; 0.05 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprise a folio entitled Ballades Dictees consisting of two letters and 20 handwritten poems by Paul Morand written during his travels in the United States in 1927. The poems and letters are bound together within a marbled folio. In his descriptive, narrative style, Morand describes experiences and images of locations he visited in the United States. Poems describe locations, such as El Paso, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; New York City; New Mexico; Hollywood, California and the Mojave Desert in California; the Theodore Roosevelt Lake in Arizona; and the Grand Canyon. Other locations are identified not by their geographic location but by their social purpose, such as the beauty parlor, barber shops, and the American film industry. Morand explores and criticizes the social conditions of the United States in this period between the World Wars as well as the landscapes he encountered while traveling.
