Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- James H. Wells was an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kentucky from 1892 - 1895. Little else is known about the history of the collection, it was found in a sealed wooden box with "Wells Glass Negatives" written on the top.
- Scope and Content
- The James H. Wells glass negatives consist of 131 images circa 1904. They are not formal portraits but staged, yet casual scenes. Several of the images appear to have been taken in the dormitory rooms of Patterson Hall (built in 1904), the first women's dormitory on campus. There are also classroom scenes with students working in laboratories, campus scenes, men working in tool shops, and women playing tennis. There are several images that appear to be from a class trip to a forested area, possibly geological in nature.
