Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Samaritan Daytop Village is a human services organization, based out of New York, with treatment programs for people struggling with addiction, mental health, parenting, employment, housing, and eldercare. Until their merger in 2015, Samaritan Village and Daytop Village were two separate organizations focused on helping at-risk populations in New York City and state.
- In 1960 Father Damian Pitcaithly, an Episcopalian priest founded the Astoria Consultation Center as a counseling service for youths in Queens. In 1965, Pitcaithly's agency founded the Samaritan Halfway Society, a residential treatment program for substance users. By the mid-1970s, under the direction of Richard Pruss, drug treatment facilities were opened throughout the city and state, from Manhattan to small towns like Ellenville in upstate New York. Throughout the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, the agency, now named Samaritan Village, expanded its services to include veterans, education and career, medical and housing programs. Past and current directors of Samaritan Village include Gloria Binkowitz, Charlotte Johnson, and Tino Hernandez.
- In 1964, Catholic Priest Father William O'Brien, Dr. Alexander Bassin, and Dr. Daniel Casriel founded Daytop Lodge in Staten Island, for male probationers from the Brooklyn Corrections Center. The philosophy of the Daytop treatment program was based on California based Synanon movement, a treatment program that encourages addicts to confront each other and demand responsible action. Upon the incorporation of Daytop Village, Father O'Brien opened treatment facilities in New York City and state, as well as New Jersey, Florida, Texas, and California. Each residential facility focused on different addict populations like youth, mother, and drug offenders and therapies evolved to reflect new practices in the treatment communities.
- During the late 1970s, Father William O'Brien helped found the World Federation of Therapeutic Communities WFTC, an international non-government agency that provides professional development and cooperation to members from around the world. Former Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Daytop Village, Charlie Devlin, also served as the Deputy President of the World Federation of Therapeutic Communities and help organize over twenty WFTC conferences.
- Samaritan Daytop Village continues to serve individuals, families and treatment health workers at their more than fifty locations across New York.

Scope and Contents
The Fundraising series, 1969-2014, comprises commemorative journals, invitations, invoices, programs, and planning and procedures handbooks, made for charity events benefiting Samaritan Daytop Village. The bulk of the series includes event logistic handbooks for the Annual awards benefit dinners and golf tournaments hosted by Samaritan in the 1990s and early 2000s. The handbooks give instructions for a variety of tasks like advertising, donations, seating, silent auctions, schedules, tickets, etc.
