- Biography / History
- John Adams Walters Jr. was born May 14, 1915, in Madison County, Kentucky, to John Walters Sr. and Jennie Mable Easter. Following in the footsteps of his father, John became a lockmaster on the Kentucky River at Boonesboro after his father's retirement. On June 16, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the 480th Engineer Maintenance Company during World War II in the European theater. John Adams Walters, Sr. was reinstated as lockmaster until his son returned from the war in 1946 to assume the lockmaster position. He was married to Delphia Robinson Walters; they had three children; Marion, Barbara, and John A. Walters, III.
- Walters was an advocate for the development of Fort Boonesborough into a National Park. He also served as a director for Blue Grass Boys State and was a honorary member of Boys Town as well as the Booneborough Lion's Club.
- John Walters Jr. passed away on November 12, 1975 in Fayette County, Kentucky and is buried in the Camp Nelson National Cemetery.
- Scope and Content
- The John Adams Walters, Jr. papers (dated 1933-1968; 0.71 cubic feet; 5 boxes) consists of diaries, correspondence, programs, certificates, photographs, a scrapbook, newspapers, and notes, which document Walters' service in World War II as well as his later career and interests. Walters wrote the two handwritten diaries during World War II, beginning in New York City awaiting deployment to England. The diaries describe Walter's daily activities and thoughts.
- The papers contain several letters between John A. Walters, Jr., his family, and friends during his European deployment. Additional items of note include two postcards depicting Boonesborough National Park; commencement programs from Walters' high school; and John A. Walters, Jr.'s Army Mechanical certification.
- There are 96 photographs depicting Walters' army training, deployment, work as lockmaster on the Kentucky River, family members, and Fort Boonesborough National Park. Also included is a 20 page scrapbook containing photos also depicting Walters Jr.'s army experience.
