- Biography / History
- James Oscar LaBach was born in Newcastle, Indiana on April 22, 1871. He was the son of James Mayer LaBach and Cornelia Esther Ryker. On October 10, 1917 in Asheville, North Carolina, James O. LaBach married Mary Shepherd Parker daughter of Watts Parker and Elizabeth "Bettie" Burgin. They had two children, James Parker, 1918, and Mary in 1920. James O. LaBach graduated from Carleton College in Northfield Minnesota and the University of Tennessee where received a Master of Science degree. He was an assistant chemist working in food nutrition at the University of Tennessee from 1885 through 1897. From 1897 through 1901, Professor LaBach was a chemist for the Proctor and Gamble Company in Cincinnati. In 1901, he became the chief chemist of the Kentucky Food and Drug Control Laboratories with headquarters at the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Kentucky. Professor LaBach was the head of the food and drug control department in 1916 until 1918 when he became director of laboratories of the Kentucky State Board of Health. James O. LaBach was a Democrat and a member of the Presbyterian Church. He wrote numerous reports and bulletins published the State of Kentucky and by the United States Government. James O. LaBach died on September 1, 1922 and is interred at the Lexington Cemetery.
- Scope and Content
- The James LaBach photographs (dated circa 1901-1922; 0.86 cubic feet; 7 boxes) consists of 152 nitrate and glass plate negatives documenting LaBach's time in Lexington and travel through the Southern United States. Most of the images are unidentified, but the subject matter includes church exteriors and interiors; scenes of the Lexington, Kentucky courthouse and Lexington Cemetery; travel images from New Orleans, Louisiana and Mt. Vernon, Virginia; interiors of laboratories; farming and agriculture; and rural landscapes.
