Collection Overview

Biography / History
Robert F. Lane (1898-1981) was born in Babylon, Long Island, New York to Frederick H. Lane (1867-1899) and Elizabeth Hull (1870-1939). After the death of his father, Robert and his mother moved to Missouri, then Washington, where he studied at the University of Washington for a time, before returning to New York in 1922. According to his draft registration card for World War II, Robert was living in Omaha, Nebraska and worked at the University of Omaha as a librarian. He also worked as a librarian for the city of Copiague, New York.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Robert F. Lane diary (dated 1920-1921; 0.03 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises one diary that documents the daily life of Robert Lane while living in Seattle, Washington and attending the University of Washington in 1920. In the entries, he describes what classes he attends, the topics of the lectures, conversations had with friends and professors, his job, registering for classes, trouble with women, receiving and sending letters, thoughts on sexual repression, helping his mother around their home, spending time with friends, financial matters, trips taken, thoughts on finishing college, the daily weather, his personal health, and the time he woke up and went to bed.
The Robert F. Lane diary collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
