Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- During the summer of 2006, two University of Kentucky students approached the library with a Zine Library Collection Proposal. The proposal was reviewed by several UK librarians, ultimately approved, and turned over to the University Archivist. It was determined that few organizations in the southern region collected zines and that a centralized repository should be established at UK. Additionally, zine publications represent a vastly undocumented portion of society and without actively pursuing these materials that information would be lost.
- By definition, zines are independent or self-published non-profit booklets, often created by a single person. Zines are customarily created by physically cutting and gluing text and images together onto a master for photocopying, but it is also common to produce the master by typing and formatting pages on a computer. The end product is usually folded and stapled. Zines document contemporary culture in the same way newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, and movies, but from a less manufactured standpoint.
- It is important for libraries to collect zines to ensure balanced and diverse collections as well as securing primary source material for scholars today and in the future.
- Scope and Content
- The University of Kentucky zine collection (dated 1980-2020, undated; 6 cubic feet, 23 boxes) comprises 311 self-published and non-profit fanzine (shortened to zine) titles, published across the United States. States represented include Kentucky (53 titles), Oregon (33 titles), California (20 titles), Florida (14 titles), Ohio (12 titles), Virginia (11 titles), Tennessee and New York (10 titles each). Subjects represented include art, comics, cycling, DIY (do-it-yourself), food, literary arts, music, perzine (personal zine), and politics and government. Collection includes zines purchased at Ephemerafest in Lexington, Kentucky, and at the Portland Zine Fest in Portland, Oregon. Additionally, the collection includes zines published by University of Kentucky students on topics such as LGTBQ+ issues.
