Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Shelby family of Kentucky descended from Isaac Shelby, first governor of Kentucky. Notable family members include his son, Thomas Hart Shelby (1789-1869) and grandsons, Thomas Hart Shelby Jr. and Edmund Pendleton Shelby (1833-1917). Susan Goodloe Hart Shelby (1839-1923) was the wife of Edmund P. Shelby, and she played a large role in collecting genealogical information about the Shelby family.
Scope and Content
The Shelby family papers (dated 1797-1947, undated; 18.55 cubic feet; 19 boxes and 2 items) comprise correspondence, financial records, genealogical files, and photographs pertaining to the Shelby family of Kentucky, including General Evan Shelby, Isaac Shelby, Thomas Hart Shelby, Isaac P. Shelby, and Edmund P. Shelby. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence between Edmund Pendleton Shelby, his children, and his wife, Susan Goodloe Hart Shelby. Additionally, many of Susan Goodloe Hart Shelby's papers relate to her genealogical research on the Shelby family. Included in the collection are copies of correspondence of Isaac Shelby, first governor of the Commonwealth, and General Evan Shelby. There are letters to land agent Thomas Hart from Danville, Ky. dealing with hemp, and letters and recipes of Mary Ann Bullock Shelby. Letters from Judge William B. Kinkead are among the papers of Thomas Hart Shelby; there are also documents related to Shelby's land holdings in Chicago, Ill. Additional items include a certificate of membership in the American Colonization Society for Thomas Hart Shelby signed by Henry Clay, family histories, genealogies, autograph albums, Bibles, scrapbooks, and a draft of Lucy Shelby's "Grassland Days and Grassland Ways."

Scope and Contents

The Thomas Hart Shelby papers series consists of letters written to or by Thomas Hart Shelby and deal with family matters and real estate dealings. The series includes a letter dated December 10, 1816 from Thomas Hart Shelby to his father, Governor Isaac Shelby and several letters from William B. Kinkead (1809-1894) written in 1850s concerning realestate dealings in Chicago. Additionally, the series includes financial papers relating to Shelby.

Scope and Contents

The Lucy Goodloe Shelby papers series consists of correspondence and notes that relate to family genealogical research carried out after the death of her mother, Susan Goodloe Hart Shelby. Included in the series are several letters written in the 1940s from her brother Evan, a New York attorney, in which he expresses his opinions with regard to World War II.
