Collection Overview

Biography / History
Sue McGowan (1887-1967) was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Mark A. Feighan (1855-1920) and Margaret Catherine Hopkins Feighan (1856-1941); she was one of four children the Feighans had. She married her first husband Clarence R. Gardiner (1870-1925), a real estate agent, in 1913. Clarence passed away unexpectedly in 1925 and then in 1942, she married her second husband George Jesse McGowan (1896-1964), a car salesman. They remained in Louisville their entire lives.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Sue McGowan letters (dated 1922-1951, undated; 0.07 cubic feet; 4 folders) comprise letters that document the life of Sue McGowan from the 1920s to post-World War II. The letters are from friends and family of Sue, most discuss trips taken, current events, U.S. politics, World War II, health, and condolences. The letters from the 1920s and 1930s are addressed to Sue Gardiner, which is Sue McGowan's name from her first marriage to Clarence Gardiner. Subsequently, from the 1940s onwards she is addressed as Sue McGowan due to her marriage to George J. McGowan in 1942.
The Sue McGowan letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
