Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The first women's basketball team at the University of Kentucky was organized in 1902 and began competing on February 21, 1903. The team was abolished in 1924 by the University Senate because of concerns about the physicality of the sport for young women. Women's basketball achieved varsity status in 1974, and the team was given the nickname, "Lady Kats," which was used until May 1995. Sue Feamster was the first coach. Players Valerie Still, Patty Jo Hedges, and Lea Wise, the team won the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championship Tournament in 1982. The following year, in 1983, the same players led the team to a number four ranking in the United States, which is the highest in the team's history.

- The "1982 UK Lady Kats SEC Champions" Facebook group page (dated 2020 February 6-December 31, 2022 February 4; 1 online resource; 62 Megabytes, 462 files) comprises posts, comments, and photographs posted to a Facebook page for the members of the 1981-1982 University of Kentucky women's "Lady Kats"basketball team and their family, friends, and fans. The Facebook group page was established by team member Valerie Still in support of a dinner and Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championship ring presentation Still organized for the team on October 9, 2020. The About section of the page reads: "1981-1982 University of Kentucky's Women's Basketball Team (considered to be the best WBB team ever at UK) - won the third ever NCAA SEC WBB Championship (UK's only SEC Championship). The team soared to number 4 in the country (UK's highest ranking)." PDF or JPG copies of the top of the page as well as each post, post comments, and photographs was downloaded/copied by hand. We could not download the videos.
