 CHARLES LAMB

T is felt that the occasion of the cen-
Itenary of the death of Charles Lamb,

which occurs on December 27th of this
year, should be marked by the erection of a
suitable memorial in the London that he loved
so well and so often eulogised. London indeed
has never had a truer champion, yet she is
without any proper commemoration of his
life and worth and writings.

A fountain stands in the Temple Gardens,
opposite his birthplace in Crown Office Row,
but in a part of the precincts not accessible
to the public. As for the house at Islington

where he and his sister lived for five years, it
cannot be said that the premises or their sur-
roundings any longer do justice to the associa-
tion or serve as a journey’s end.

All over the English—speaking world there is
increasing recognition of Elia’s brave and
unselfish career, of his humanity, wisdom, and
humour, and of his unique position among
writers. In this view a movement and a fund
have been started by the Elian Society to
collect contributions for the erection of a
memorial as near as possible to the old site

of Christ’s Hospital, the Blue-Coat School
which nourished his genius and endowed him
with lifelong friends.

For four centuries the school chapel was
Christ Church, just off Newgate Street, and
the seclusion of its garden makes it an ideal
site for a Lamb memorial. The church
authorities have accorded the necessary per—
mission, and the suggestion favoured by the
Elian Society is that of a commemorative
tablet in bronze, with a bronze portrait bust
in the centre. The scheme is to include a
shelter or recessed background of stone, with
seating accommodation for six or seven
pilgrims or passers-by.

We earnestly hope that the response will be
prompt and generous enough to allow of the
work being commissioned and completed at
an early date. Donations towards this end
are now invited.
