Dear Mr. North,

Many thanks for your letter and the cutting enclosed.
I am not quite sure what your idea was in forwarding me the
cutting, or what you had inxnind. America is now in a very
lucky position to be able to reduce her taxation; with her

been able to make out of the A lies, Zand with the pressure she

has been able to bring to bear upon them to secure payment since

the War, she is naturally able to look forward to a reduction of
taxation more rapidly than we can here; we , in this countzy
are expected to pay other people, but nobody apparently eXpects
to pay us.

I hope you flourish, and that you will give my vezy kind
regards to Mrs. North, for whom I always have a very warm
affection.

Business continues satisfactoxy, in spite of the great

industrial struggle we have just been through. I felt certain

the general Strike would fail, but I was rather afraid there
might be some bloodshed before a settlement was reached.
waever the good humour of everyone was admirable, and there
was very little violence. The Government plans for feeding
London and the big cities had been well laid and worked ad-
mirably. The good hunour of the young undergraduates, who
drove most of the trains and such of the 'buses as did run,

was an admirable contribution. The 'buses had a uniform fare
of am as it was difficult for the amateurs to collect different
fares for different distances, and one of the wittiest notices
chalked up on a 'bus was "None but the brave deserve the three-
penny fare", and there were many more like this; for example,
one 'bus had had the window smashed with a brick bat, and the
University conductor had written underneath "Emergency Exit
only"&

I am glad to say, we are all back at work again with
renewed energy, and though there will undoubtedly be considerable
loss to bear, the Unions, will I think, have been effectively
curbed for some time to come.

With very kind regards,

Believe me,
Yours sincerely,
