section false xt7qjq0stw34_3226 xt7qjq0stw34 April 5, 1902. Dear Mr. Putnam: I have received your letter of Mar. 21. enclosing Mr. North's letter of March 20.1902. I am bound to say that I don't quite un- derstand his letter. I thought it was quite clear that we are treating with him on the basis of his original offer to Mr. Iucas of about a year ago. He then agreed to furnish Mr. Lucas with a Popy of the collation of all Letters in his possession and of all letters which he could get sight of. There was no reservation of any kind. In his letter of March 20. 1902 he appears to reserve any unpublished Letters or new material. This is not at all to Mr. Lucas's mind. It is essential that we shall have a cle ar un- derstanding on this point and would you mind writinr to Mr. North. ~ Yours sincerely, (Signed) A. M. A. Methuen. G. H. Putnam Esq. G. P. PUTNAM’S SONS 27a29 WESTZB’L" STREET NEW YORK '5 24 BEDFORD STREET, STRAND, LONDON. April 19, 1902. Dear Mr. North: It appears that there is not a clear un- derstanding between yourself on the one hand said Mr. Lucas and Messrs. Methuen on the other, as to the exact scape of the service to be rendered or ' nature of the material to be delivered in con— sideration of the payment by Messrs. Metheun of the sum of One hundred dollars. I find it ~a_ A?" little difficult to fill intelligently the role of "buffer" in the negotiation. I enclose a copy of a letter this morning at hand from Mr. . 4 Metheun, which will indicate the nature of the question that has arisen with him. It will be fqr you to decide WJat you want to do in the matter. . MW Ernest D. North, E80,, /// %M c o Messrs. Chas. Scribenr's Sons, New York.
